I moved my server over to google vm running bitnami wordpress a few years ago and periodically the server will lock up. I feel like its something from my cron job running over a few months and it's using up some resources and eventually locks up the virtual machine. The only thing I've noticed is a thousands of 0kb phpreszz... files in the /tmp folder. I don't think this is the cause but is this normal?

I'm also getting the same issue and this is not normal because on the server temp folder space is sometimes getting full and unable to perform any other action so currently i have to empty the temp folder manually every often. these temp files are created when images are being downloaded from the rest and the phprets package dose not remove/close open temp files that is why this temp files are left on the server.
