Badge (alert counter) Possible?

Thank you for the awesome plugin. Is it possible to implement a badge atop an inactive icon to indicate number of alerts/notifications?

Alternatively, maybe an optional text box below an inactive icon where we can alert the user to new messages or alerts for a given tab.
