current situation

Today styling in ocular gatsby is all over the place.
From a visual perspective it is a mix of elements that were designed for the original deck.gl web site in 2016 plus bits from various Uber design systems over the ages.
From a technical perspective style information can be found in scss stylesheets, in inline styles, in styled-components, in config files...

objectives

There are 3 objectives to the styling effort.

  • single source of truth - there should be one place where styling information is stored and one way to expose style overrides.
  • visual consistency - ocular-gatsby look and feel should feel organized, hierarchical and consistent
  • uses uber front-end oss - we should make the best of uber front end open source tech such as baseweb and styletron
