First update! Our plansThis project follows what we shared on our roadmap around accessibility and page content analysis, as well as long-standing improvements we’ve been wanting to make happen for a while such as auto-save and a live preview. Releasing this to Wagtail users & implementersOverall we’re aiming to deliver a next-gen UX for the whole of Wagtail, starting with the page editor, all the while keeping the same APIs and flexibility for developers implementing Wagtail and customising it. We will strive to avoid breaking changes where possible 🤞 but there likely will be some, particularly for Wagtail customisations that significantly change the UI of the CMS. Our early planning aims for a Wagtail 2.18 release with the majority of changes, with additional updates in preceding and following releases. We're feeling like / hoping these are settling down now, and that we're on track to start our build in late Jan / early Feb. Wider Wagtail implicationsWe think it makes sense for the changes we're making to things like form fields and streamfield to be inherited across Wagtail wherever these are being used. This includes things like Snippets, images and documents. This means we need to now take into account those other interfaces, and how these changes will look there. However the alternative would mean supporting two different implementations of these things, which feels bad for all sort of reasons - and besides, these changes will improve those pages and would need to be done at some point. I think it was just that when you have a long editing screen with a wide variety of fields/blocks, it can be hard to quickly locate something you're looking for in the middle 50% of the page. Being able to see the outline of the page structure and clicking the name of a field or block to jump right to it seems hugely useful. |

From the looks of the video, I can appreciate the desire to create more room in the main area of the page, but worry about the loss of header space and where we might put buttons for things that don't necessarily fit into the context of Wagtail itself. For instance, in my current project I have implemented a "layout" model with an external graphical css grid tool that allows the page editor to make basic page layout changes independently of the templates and static files. The CSS they "build" in the external tool is then put in the final page in style tags in the head element if they select a "layout" to apply to a page. Here's a video to help visualize this: Screen.Recording.2021-12-09.at.11.22.27.AM.movIn the present UI, the most obvious way to do things like this is to put buttons for them in the "big green header" because, well, there's a lot of space up there and Wagtail puts big buttons up there too, so it's not terribly difficult to add another one without making things look funny, and without getting into the react core of Wagtail's admin, but rather by just editing the html template to add a button to a template block. Will there be a reserved, consistent space in the new UI for putting things like this in? |

I agree with @Scotchester. About drag and drop blocks, having played with this a bit (in React, using https://github.com/clauderic/dnd-kit), this can be really tricky to implement, especially on touch interfaces. Making your page scroll while dragging a block can bring many edge cases that are hard to tackle.
Apart from the auto-save feature, this could be really useful, again, for some editors I worked with. |

Out of the things on the 'not MVP' list, I think this is the one I'm most a fan of too :-) With the support for collapsible streamfield blocks and dynamically extracting a summary title from them, I reckon a lot of the building blocks are already in place and it would be a relatively quick win to add this. |

Thanks for the feedback everyone. We're going to have another look at the header - we think we can probably make it feel less crowded by increasing the height slightly. We're taking on board the love for the page navigator too, so thank you for that. The page type was missing in previous designs - we're now putting this on the settings panel on the right, as it doesn't feel like it needs to be visible all the time (more useful for developers than editors). In terms of adding custom buttons / extending the interface, we think there might be space in the headers still (if you use a smaller button - see the wagtail-localize example in the picture above). Where more space is needed one thing we'd like to allow is people to be able to add their own right hand panels in, with their own icons. |

I just took a look at the new design, and am a bit afraid that fields' headings are not easy to identify.
Current WagtailIn current Wagtail version, headings are not very sexy, but they are very clear about what we are currently editing.
Other CMSA similar approach to the new design can be found in Gin theme for Drupal (which is really great by the way), and in that case, I think that the small border around the
Sticky headingAnother issue with the current (and future) design : if we are editing a very long streamfield block, we have no way to know which field we are currently editing. The new page navigator on the right side might partially solve this issue without sticky heading though. |

I am with you @fabienheureux that the headings are a bit hard to identify at the moment. I think the issue with the borders is that is can become unwieldy with nesting where you will have 5 borders next to one another and then it does not help to identify much anymore either. Larger heading with more space in between the fields could improve the identifiability of each field with out the nesting issue of borders. It will increase the length of the page, but that should not be much of an issue when the in-page navigation works nicely. |

About the borders, I had the issue recently in a project with lots of nested blocks. However, I don't think that scales with 5 or more borders 😓 |

Did you see how we use nested borders and vertical labels to help users locate themselves in nested StreamFields? Ben demoed it here: https://youtu.be/ONI0Dfe5CU4?t=638. For labels, here’s the standard we’re aiming for as a reference, APCA, which is currently earmarked for inclusion in WCAG 3.0: https://www.myndex.com/APCA/fullmatrix?BG=ffffff&TXT=2e1f5e&DEV=98G4g&BUF=APCA-G. According to this, the combination of #2E1F5E over white at 15px and in bold gives us a perfect "5" readability score. This just makes this text style readable, not necessarily identifiable, but I believe the choice of having relatively small headings / field labels is to leave more room for the content to have more visual importance. Personally I haven’t found headings to be hard to identify due to the fact nothing else uses this very high-contrast "indigo + bold" text style. The inclusion of an icon to the left of the text (offset from the alignment of the rest of the page) also helps. |

Hooooo, I forgot about this. I did react to Phil's screenshot, that does not displays nested streamfield. Edit : I looked again at the screenshot, and I think that what bothers me the most is the fact that only one field has an icon whereas in the video presentation, every fields has its own icon. Having an icon on every field bring the missing structure I am talking about. |

@fabienheureux yes, the icons thing is still up in the air (feedback welcome!). A concern we have is how likely it’d be for developers to consistently make use of icons as they create their edit handlers. We could support icons but have them be optional and default to none, or have a placeholder icon as a default. Or not support icons. |

Another week, another quick video to show the latest progress. Scan-ability of the page@fabienheureux brought up a few points in response to the last video and a screenshot I posted which made us look again at the general scan-ability of a page. This means things like, how simple is it to quickly find the field you're looking for? How easily can users decipher which boxes relate to which labels and how those labels relate to each other. Based on this we've updated the designs a little, which I talk through in this video. Page editor related changes in 2.16@thibaudcolas is working hard finishing of the slim left hand menu so that this can be included in the 2.16 release in February. We're also hoping to bring in a lightweight version of the secondary page actions in 2.16 (move, delete, add child page etc in a dropdown next to the breadcrumb). This is something that it feels odd we don't have at the moment. As we're now fairly set on where this will be in the newer page editor, it is a small change with high value that we could make now. As part of this we'll probably remove the delete button from the publish menu (we think removing it rather than keeping it in 2 places makes sense, but feedback is welcome). Other than that, we still have some tasks outstanding as above, and we're still looking for people's feedback. The stuff we've had so far has been really thought provoking (thank you!) and I hope you can see we're taking it into account. It's good to be getting these designs into the community! |

Great work so far, the new mockups look like a big improvement. My one current issue with the wagtail editor design, as mentioned above, is scanability (or ability to find the field you are looking for) on the editor page. This affects heavy pages with many fields, or with large streamfields (coincidentally these are usually the pages that get edited most frequently). My input on the matter would be:

Hi @vsalvino, thanks for the comments. We've certainly reduced horizontal space with the new designs, so more fields should fit on your screen at a time and less scrolling. Scanability is something we're thinking about a lot - things like, is it clear where streamfield starts and ends, for instance. At the same time, we want a nice clean interface without lots of noise, so the trick is getting the balance right between the two. I think we're going to need to do some user testing once we've got the build to a point where people can use it to judge if we've got that right or not. There are some fairly simple things we can do to make it clearer though. I also I think the right hand navigation (that may or may not be in the first release!) would also help with finding the field you want. In terms of nested streamfields, as Thibaud mentioned above, did you see where we demo'd this previously here ? |

^ I believe our demo (and design work) is based on a real-world example with 5 levels of nesting. This is to reproduce setups like: Body > Accordion > Accordion item > CTA > (Page block or URL block)

👋 Happy new year everyone! Our most recent discussions were about user experience and designs – today I thought it would be interesting to give you further info about the project scope again. AccessibilityAdmin UIWe’re intending to make the most of this redesign project to deliver concrete accessibility improvements. @SaptakS and I have been busy reviewing the designs to flag accessibility considerations, and specify how different UI elements should behave and be conveyed to users of keyboard navigation and assistive technology. We’re using Accessibility Bluelines, a reference set of design annotations which we add onto the mockups. In practice it looks like this:

We’re generally attempting to follow the established patterns of WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices, but this is easier said than done. We could definitely use more help with this if others are interested in contributing to those annotations. Accessible Wagtail sitesIn our first project update, we referred to "page content analysis" as a part of the project’s scope. This includes a lot of different types of analysis – one I’m very excited about is to bundle a page accessibility checker directly within Wagtail. We’re currently considering Sa11y, which is based on the same Tota11y package than the existing wagtail-accessibility. Having this available as a built-in tool might seem surprising to some – this is actually very important to us due to our commitment to have Wagtail conform with ATAG 2.0, which we’ve communicated on our accessibility statement. This standard mandates that authoring tools should be available, and that they should help in the production of accessible content. Having automated checks is a fundamental part of this. We’re still not quite sure how to make the most of those checks – whether they should be opt-in, or running by default. Whether to track the results somewhere site-wide. We’ve also considered other tools, such as axe, which have more thorough checks but that are less specific towards content authoring considerations. Again, keen to hear people’s thoughts on this. Multilingual supportWe’ll be delivering improvements to our multilingual support in this redesign:
In this area, we’re particularly keen for people who have RTL experience to continue the discussion in #7793 – we have a pretty clear plan, but are lacking the real-world experience needed. UI architecture technical debtWagtail’s UI architecture (or lack thereof) has been affecting our ability to deliver improvements for quite some time now (#7689), and we’re finally in a position to take big steps. As part of the editor redesign, we will be introducing a design system for Wagtail – and refactoring existing UI code to follow a component-driven methodology. In the long run, this will make it simpler for our UI contributors to deliver gradual improvements to components – and will allow everyone to create new functionality with ready-made building blocks. My colleague @bcdickinson and I gave a talk about this type of methodology at a Wagtail Space not so long ago, and our plans for Wagtail are almost identical: Reusable UI components: A journey from React to Wagtail. Breaking changes in UI codeWe’ve alluded to this in previous updates – although we’re intending for this page editor rebuild to make for a smooth transition for Wagtail implementers, there will be breakage when it comes to UI customisations. Wagtail currently only has very few parts of its UI framework made available for reuse (a few dependencies and React components), while everything else is in a gray area with regards to its stability. Legacy dependenciesOur legacy dependencies are a good example of this. Here is an overview of changes we are expecting:
All of the above dependencies have never been meant for reuse for third-party customisations, and aren’t fit-for-purpose anymore in Wagtail core. They’re either the direct source of real-world accessibility issues, poorly built and hard to work with, or simply not in use anymore. For each, we’ve provided its expected status, and how to look for it in individual projects’ code. Legacy componentsSimilarly to dependencies, we will provide overviews with all of our UI components once available, highlighting any potential breakage. One upside to those changes is that new components will be built with third-party reuse in mind – whether in site-specific customisations, or third-party packages. Regardless of whether people are currently doing such customisations or not, we’d be very interested to hear about what components people would expect to have made reusable like this. See for example @timonweb’s non-admin Draftail, which makes the rich text editor available outside of the CMS, as well as all of the link/image/embed/document/snippet choosers. Rolling those changes beyond the page editorWe’ve alluded to this here and there already – some of the design changes we’ve made will be reflected outside of the page editor from the get-go. Provisionally, this includes:
Here, we want to work with people who maintain third-party packages for Wagtail, both with custom UIs, and customisations to built-in views. If you maintain such a package, please reach out so we can collaborate on testing how our changes affect your implementation. That was quite the update! @timonweb it's also worth noting that we ended up using a web component approach for the new Wagtail userbar in 4.2. It's a great way to isolate behaviour/styles and suited really well for the case where we need to inject UI into the front facing site. |

Great work everybody! Really nice to see the progress. Great feedback too! 👏 I've got a suggestion. In AdminLTE Bootstrap, there is a hamburger menu in the header section. See the AdminLTE demo. Maybe this approach suits Wagtail too? On desktop viewport, the hamburger icon toggles the width of the sidebar. Icons + labels vs Icons only.
On mobile viewport, the hamburger icon toggles the complete menu. Collapsed vs icons + labels.
Moving the toggle form the sidebar to the header has some advantages:

Oh that is a nice touch definitely. Maybe one consideration would be that the "hamburger" should indicate what it's going to do, maybe with slight variations of the icon. One thing I am wondering it about the accessibility of the "click outside to close" on mobile screens. Maybe there should be a specific button on the slide-out that controls this... 🤔 does this bring is right back to what we already have in the mock ups? |

Just started working on a customer requirement for a navigation button as a StreamField Block, and was surprised to see the link dialog like that in RichTextField wasn't available as a "LinkBlock", so I'm with you @Scotchester and @tbrlpld. Anything I can do to help this along? |

@thibaudcolas & team, Not sure whether this discussion is the right place but Thibaud tasked me with reviewing some of the lightweight frameworks out there and see what may be suitable for the middle ground of interactivity where React is not suitable but we do not want to keep using jQuery. Here are my findings so far - the tldr is that I am all for Stimulus JS - but there are some great options out there and I hope this helps guide the team's decisions. Example Code Notes

With those technical choices I think it’s important to keep in mind Wagtail is an open-source project with a slow pace and a very diverse contributor base, all of whom have different skillsets, with Django awareness being the (most) common denominator. We’re on a 3-month release schedule, with maybe at most 3 to 5 FTE developers (in aggregate) working on the project. On a good day 1-2 of those (aggregate) FTE developers would have UI expertise. That makes any kind of large-scale UI rewrite completely unappealing in my opinion, React or anything else. I think it’s more useful for us to consider gradual approaches, where by definition we’ll have to deal with heterogeneous implementations. The "page editor" is built of many things, so let’s first rewrite the components that need rewriting the most, get some value out of this, and see how the customisation of those components go. |

hi @lb- , I found this project to create interactive web pages purely in Python https://idom-docs.herokuapp.com/docs/index.html IDOM is a Python web framework for building interactive websites without needing a single line of Javascript. This is accomplished by breaking down complex applications into nestable and reusable chunks of code called “components” that allow you to focus on what your application does rather than how it does it. |

Hi everyone. An update on the new page editor: SponsorshipI'm sure most of you will have seen but just in case - we announced Google as our first sponsors for this work last week. We're thankful to them for helping to make this happen! BuildWe've started building! The frontend work has began and will be continuing for a number of months. For hardcore enthusiasts, you can see all of our work tickets here. There isn't much progress to demo yet but it feels exciting to know there will be soon ReleasesWe are aiming to release our work across two Wagtail quarterly releases. We're unsure which quarterly releases these will be yet - the first one is likely to either be May (hopeful) or August 2022.
We know that Release 2 will include breaking changes for quite a few Wagtail sites - for instance, anyone who has customised their choosers will need to do some custom work as we plan to rewrite these from the ground up. Although release 1 will cause some work for anyone who has customised their page editor interface, we hope to keep this to a minimum. Saving pages without mandatory fields@gasman has done a proof of concept and written an RFC to support some logic we'll need in order to implement the autosave user experience we think is best. In summary, we would start allowing pages to be saved, but not published or previewed, without mandatory fields filled in. The RFC is open and available for comments. Old ticket triage@thibaudcolas has done a great job of triaging all the old Wagtail tickets to find any that are relevant to the page editor (there are lots!). Together we are working through them to try and make some decisions about which will be closed by this huge amount of work we are doing. Though there is a lot to get through, it feels good to know we're tackling some old standing issues. That's all for now. Hiya. It would act as a page index, so you could see an outline of what the page contains. You could then click one of the headings and the main page editor on the left would scroll down to that point - so it would be an easier way to know what is on the page, and navigate to certain parts of the page. Not that useful for short pages - very useful for long pages. |

Nice, I thought so. I ask this because is think the minimap could solve a nasty UX item on the current editor page which is when you have fields with errors on the page, at least in my case and when there is big streamfield it comes very hard to identify where those field with errors are. I feel the minimap is the perfect place to support/solve this need, may be by adding "red" dashes/anchors on the minimap and when user clicks on one of them it gets scrolled upto the field with the error. I know the minimap feature will take longer than expected, may be it would be a good idea to create a mini-roadmap for the minimap by defining which feature could be released first, based on editors need. Hi folks! This is a small but critical update on our work – we’ve spent more time reviewing likely UI breaking changes due to this work, and have published our findings alongside the 2.16 release highlights for visibility. Here is a link to the full analysis. Compared to what we had shared in the past, this covers more customisation patterns (some of which aren’t a definite "will break", but are worth looking into"). For each customisation pattern, we provide a sample code search regular expression, and an indication of the likelihood of a breaking change based on our current plans. Community packages reviewAnother big change is that we’re sharing our review of 63 community packages. This is so those maintainers know what’s coming, and also so Wagtail implementers can run a similar analysis on their sites. Even though the large majority of those UI customisations aren’t officially supported, they are widespread in the Wagtail ecosystem, and it’s in everyone’s interest we collaborate on creating useful replacements and migrating from the current patterns to new official APIs. Once you’ve read the blog post, please join #package-maintainers on the Wagtail Slack if you’d like to discuss this in further detail. Next stepsWe’re looking for feedback, and people who want to actively collaborate on this for their respective packages. I ask we:

Based on my experience with WordPress Gutenberg, I believe Wagtail should ensure that developers can always customize the Admin UI with only Python and Django templates if they desire. Gutenberg took the opposite approach and, in practice, requires that developers use Webpack/React to develop custom Gutenberg blocks. |

Yes. We tend to refer to this as "auto-save", I don’t think we’ve expanded upon the implementation plan anywhere. At this stage I believe we’re planning for there not to be a hard lock – you’d just get an error message if there are multiple people editing a page at the same time (manual locking would also still be possible). |

Hi all, an update on our progress. @stevedya and @thibaudcolas are working their way through dismantling some old Wagtail things and putting in some new Wagtail things. Things like removing Hallo editor, allowing SVGs usage in CSS, and setting up Tailwind 💨 . We're also working on updating the slim sidebar to match the new designs and functionality. This is all quite gnarly - rewriting old bits of code and unpicking lots of previous work, but we're getting there with it, one day at a time. Soon we'll be on to new features, like the new header and tabs! 😃 @gasman has been busily rewriting field panels in various ways that I'll struggle to explain - but the end goal of that work is to make field panel usage more consistent for developers, whilst allowing some new functionality in the new designs, such as having an associated icon. I know other members of the core team have also been helping out a lot recently with investigations into FE frameworks and validating clever technical decisions. We really appreciate what you are doing to make this project a success! ⭐ The next Wagtail release will be early May. We're aiming to get a version of the new page editor ready for then, including the UI changes, but not including new modals, autosave or live preview. Things like the minimap might or might not make it to this release. Anything that misses this release we expect to be included in the following release (August). We've been doing some more work on the choosers following feedback, more thinking, and reviewing old issues. We'll provide another update on those soon. Finally, @thibaudcolas has been prolific recently in writing excellent and useful blog posts that are relevant to this project - this onetells you what you need to know about what might break in your wagtail site for upcoming releases, and this one shows how this project is going to be improving Wagtail's accessibility. As always, let us know if you have any feedback or thoughts or just want to say "keep going"! |

Hi all, I know I am late to the party, but i wanted to give in some feedback, that maybe will find it's way into the editor UI: Just a quick explanation to our situation: we have a lot of trained power users that manage a lot of pages and as someone said above: mostly pretty complex ones. One topic that has come up for us is "Informational Density": Since we see Wagtail as an operational instead of an informational system, we would like to increase the informational density especially in the editor UI since we see a lot of space for improvement here. (This is a good blog article on the topic: https://wbsimms.com/information-density-driven-ux/) We are using wagtail as a headless-cms, so a lot of infos we put in are keys to others systems that get rendered in our SPA. A few improvement ideas that have come up:
Everything taken together I really appreciate the work on refactoring the wagtail UI and allowing us to work with amazing APIs. I also understand the need to balance between unexperienced and very experienced users. |

That’s very interesting feedback for us @NotANormalNerd, thank you for sharing!
How many fields are in the viewport is a big concern for us, since the page editor can get very long very quick. So far we’ve decided to tackle this mainly by reducing the visual prominence of the editing UI / chrome. I don’t think we’d want to decrease the white space too much, as it’s important that the hierarchy of section headings and field labels stays scannable. We’re expect this view’s markup to be much more predictable than in the past, so if your team did want to decrease the whitespace, this should be possible with much more reliable CSS overrides than currently.
This is already possible, and will keep being possible. We’ve moved the fields’ help text to be within the flow of the form, and made the sidebar collapsible, to make more use of the horizontal space. The main goal is to make room for the right-side panels / drawers, but it also helps for multi-column blocks. The current design is targeting up to 3 fields per row, although in practice there won’t be a set limit. Even if this is and will stay possible, I have to say we do try to discourage people from doing this simply because having fields over multiple columns makes it harder to find fields for users of screen magnification software.
I’m surprised by this! Can you say more? In my mind, the point of hiding action buttons is to make the important parts of the UI stand out more – so if they’re always on, they’ll be a bit easier to reach in theory, but in practice the whole thing will just be more cluttered and hard to scan. We were expecting the hiding of the buttons to be most desirable for power users in particular, so I’m surprised to see this on your list.
This is something we’d like to do. If you haven’t already, have a look at wagtail-generic-chooser, wagtail-autocomplete, and the (potentially) related Create and select related content proposed Google Summer of Code project. |

Thank you for the feedback @thibaudcolas Regarding hiding the action buttons: I think it is more of what to hide. While we should hide some things for decluttering the UI, I think that action buttons should not be a part of that. I really like the plane cockpit analogy for operational interfaces: While things that are only needed in a certain timeframe, like setting navigation infos or computer settings, things like seatbelt signs or motor and apu settings are just one button press away. To put this analogy to wagtail: Hiding the comments is fine, because we only need them in a review phase, but action buttons are always used, I can not thing about a workflow where we don't need them.

I've been using Wagtail for just a few months now on a new long-postponed project for our small business. I'm a one-man-show in that it doesn't matter what needs to be done, frontend, backend, devops, etc, I'm the one that does it and I don't have anyone helping me, so the thing that is very very important to me is being able to implement something new quickly without running to roadblocks down the road after I've committed to adding something in my toolchain. I've had enough time to run through a lot of the typical things I would be doing on a regular basis. I also heavily consider how my users (non-technical employees that will be managing various content) are able to quickly grasp new concepts. I will have to do a lot of hand-holding with them, so every single thing that reduces such hand-holding is a blessing for me. For me, I think probably the biggest need I have so far with Wagtail's admin is that I want what an editor will create in a RichTextField to be predictably rendered on the front-end without every little thing having to be handled with custom code. I really wish this was more of an "out of the box" feature, but I understand why it isn't. This is a bit out of the scope of your current goals discussed in this thread, but I wanted to take this chance to mention it. When one of my users edits a RichTextField and adds a couple paragraphs and a few images and a list, I'd really want them to see the field's content and the frontend content to match as closely as possible without me having to go implement a bunch of things first. If they tell an image to be right-aligned, they should see it right-aligned in Draftail and it should get right-aligned on the frontend without me having to add a bunch of custom CSS to both the admin and frontend to get it working. This remains true for all the elements provided by default in Draftail. The other less significant pet peeve I have (but more relevant to this discussion) at the moment with the design of Wagtail's admin, is how input/textarea/Draftail fields have the same background color as the rest of the page and there aren't borders when an input is unfocused. This makes them sort of "hidden in plain sight" where it's not really clear where an input field is. A subtle off-white background along with a simple border that's visible when the field is unfocused would help tremendously. Along these same lines, I think providing some type of standard theme system would go a long way as well. As it stands now, I am forced to figure out how to handle my own desired CSS changes in the admin. I can't just add a global style for |

We’ve spent a lot of time on this. As far as I’m aware the only thing that isn’t predictable is the images’ alignment as you mention. I’d be interested to hear more if there are other things that aren’t predictable! Back to the image alignment, I believe we ended up not reflecting it prominently in the rich text images for two reasons:
If you have thoughts on how this could work – please open an issue / feature request about this, it could well be worth revisiting. As far as this project – we hope the live preview will help a lot with this. There are some aspects of the content that will always have to be different no matter what (for example whitespace in the editor doesn’t collapse, while it does once rendered on the page). So hopefully the live preview will bridge that gap better than anything else could.
Yep, this was done to put more focus on the content and less on the UI, but ends up making it hard to figure out what is interactive. In the new designs, all fields will have a very clear border, with the exception of the page’s title field.
For your specific example – we’re hoping this will be solved by using the same Draftail widget for all "text" field types. The main motivation for this is to support the same content analysis, but this will also help with that use case. See RFC 60: Draftail Usage for General Text Entry for further details. More generally – the problem here is that Wagtail’s UI code hasn’t aged well, and there’s never been a clear API contract on what is and isn’t customisable with the styles. We’re hoping to address this as part of this project and beyond in two major ways:

Block Settings supportWhile developing a new feature usually we feel the need of having kind of a "Settings" section at block Level inside the Streamfield, this is to avoid facing the Editors to lots of fields that are not really for content just block-configuration. It would be very nice to have a "cog" icon (next to the "duplicate" icon) that once it gets clicked it opens a section/modal/slide-in where those block-settings fields values can be defined. ie.
Currently we've done this in a very rawly way, it is by adding an extra css class called is-block-setting to the block field attributes and then intervene the struct_block base admin template. This way while defining our block-class we also easily define which fields should be considered/grouped as settings without writing any extra code/class. Here some examples of different block-settings fields we've use: I think it would very nice to have a native way to define which blocks fields are content and which ones just settings while building a new StructBlock Class (see attachments).

We'd definitely love to see something like this. The idea of generic tabs, so that fields can be categorised by 'content', 'aesthetics', so on, is ideal. Another example is something like a custom PointField widget that we created recently (for Mapbox). Ideally you'd be able to point n' click on the map, but a separate tab for "metadata" information — coordinates, place name — would be helpful. That way we can keep the main content editor view clean and simple for editors, and hide more technical fields that require a more intimate understanding of data / the CMS / etc, which will often be a subset of advanced editors. (Of course, that example is a bit of a special case where the thing will involve a bit of custom work, but even just being able to share the UI pattern would be helpful, I think.) A simpler example is where we've done 'page builder' style things where you want to give people access to blocks, like a section block with a streamfield inside, that has a default background colour or font that can be updated if desired — in special cases. Perfect example of something that would ideally be hidden away until clicked on. |

Thanks to you @phildexter the talk about the new UI was very nice, doing a great job there. Sure, I will look for some other examples and share them here but basically after several projects and receiving feedback from clients what we felt was the need of applying kind of Separation of Concerns (SoC) between "content" and “settings". Additional thoughts from my side:
Our aim was to give Editors a content focused CMS, but also to offer the power/freedom of tweaking frontend settings in case they need, all this without cluttering the Admin UI. |

One thing I kind of lost track in the whole discussion here is: Will there be a general redesign/refactor of the wagtail UI, including list views, reports... If yes, could we split this into another discussion as well and keep track of what changes? With the removal of some of the technical debt and some of the old libraries, as well as the introduction of tailwind.css as a base (I think I read this is coming). If yes I would also have some thoughts for improvements:

Yes there will be, and yes it’ll be its own project with its own discussion thread(s) :) At this stage I can only say that:
As far as side effects / incompatibilities – right now our goal is very much to keep things contained to the page editor. It’s not always the most sensible course of action for some changes (for example the sidebar). Wagtail’s 3.0 release candidate will be available in about 2-3 weeks, so very shortly we’ll be able to detail what exactly we’re expecting to change where. And update our forecast of breaking changes accordingly. Also worth mentioning the Google Summer of Code project idea: ”Apply new page editor UX to all of Wagtail“. We don’t know whether this is going ahead or not so I wouldn’t recommend sharing UX feedback there just yet, but you could consider subscribing to updates. Whether this is going ahead or not will be confirmed towards the end of May. |

We have a separate discussion thread for it, though one of the biggest headline changes are the UX improvements from the page editor 2022 project. With the 3.0 first release candidate out, this is a good time for us to provide an update from our last post on potential breaking changes in UI code. Wagtail currently only has very few parts of its UI framework made available for reuse, while everything else is in a gray area with regards to its stability. It must be my fault, but ...
When I create a new virtualenv and run 'pip install wagtail', I get version
2.
I went to Pypi and saw the page for Version 3.
I ran that page's 'pip install wagtail' and got the Version two thing.
I downloaded the source and wheel, just for fun. I don't know how to
install from a wheel.
I doubt that you meant installation of 3.0 to be this mysterious.
What am I doing wrong?

@irugoy glad you’re liking it so far :) As you might have seen from Phil’s post, right now we have to be taking things out of scope to make sure we have enough funding for the fundamentals. I think everyone likes the block settings concept but it’s clearly not something that Wagtail "wouldn’t work" without, so we can’t justify adding this at the detriment of our ability to cover existing functionality. I believe we did do designs / visual prototypes for it though, that worked quite well, so it’d certainly be something we’d consider looking for sponsorship for, or implementing further down the line. |

thanks @thibaudcolas for taking care about this topic, I totally understand from the funding and already-planned roadmap point of view. Don't get me wrong please, I am just sharing my thoughts on a feature I’m sure will give Streamfields in Wagtail a much better developer & user experience by decluttering the UI. I’m not reinventing the wheel here, this kind of feature has been around in other CMS with this building-block ecosystem for several years now. Let's hope it can go inside soon. @davidjeba https://wagtail.org/packages/ is powered by https://djangopackages.org, if you're curious. We did an few rounds of categorising where it makes sense. Wagtail CRX could be under frontend, but that is a very big stretch.
IMHO, the best you can do is find like-minded people and contribute with development and funds to make it happen. We are not discouraging anyone from it, quite the opposite. The key thing here is that the core team is rather small and cannot do everything, so we have to focus our efforts

Hi all, Thanks for all the active engagement on this thread, and the wonderful feedback. An update for you on where we're at with the page editor project. Field panels, streamfield, Rich text@thibaudcolas is busy working through the many changes we need to make to the fields themselves for Wagtail 4. There is a lot to get right here, with lots of design review needed as we build. It's pretty exciting though. Choosers@gasman is making good progress with the generic choosers, which is going to make the developer experience of using and extending the choosers far more standardised, and give us a solid foundation for the future 👏 Though we've many plans to improve the choosers, we're not going to be able to achieve all of them with the budget we have remaining. We're still discussing how much we think we can fit in and what makes sense for a release. What doesn't fit in will form ready made bits of work for future sponsorship, or for contributions. AutosaveUnfortunately at this point it's looking unlikely that autosave will make the Wagtail 4 cutoff. With 6 weeks to go until the release candidate, we have to be realistic about what we can finish by then, and trying to fit this in would risk the quality of the other work we're doing. We'll keep you posted, but for now expect it to be in the November release. Live PreviewLive preview is a much smaller feature to fit in so we are hopeful this can still make it...although there is some thinking for us to do about how this would work without autosave. Clearly it wouldn't be "live" but instead, would act as preview does now, just as part of the same screen. It's worth also saying that many of the page editor changes we've made already (header, info panel) and the changes listed above will also be coming to Snippets, thanks to the work @laymonage and @kaedroho are doing. But what about the other stuff?Things that are not discussed above that we know would be massively valuable and would love to see happen in the near future, include:

@phildexter wonderful brief update, regarding taking on part or more of the features, me and my team under a2z-eco-sys.com (which is a group of international freelancer-developers and software companies) would be happy to take on, however, can you please list the features that must be done, but yet havn't had started or have no enough developers to continue the working? and regarding this:

👋 for anyone still following this thread, just wanted to share this little recap I’ve made of Wagtail’s page editor changes over the duration of the page editor 2022 project – from v2.16 to v4.2: best.movAlso available on YouTube if you want to refer to it more easily / use timestamps. There’s been lots. There’s lots more we would have wanted to do, which we’ll hopefully get to in the future.
