What is the issue with the HTML Standard?

This week's triage call (#10205) was canceled. The next one is scheduled for March 28, 9am PST. Note that this is 1 week later (per #10163) in an America+Europe friendly time.

People interested in attending the next call please respond here or reach out privately to me or the spec editors. We will be tagging issues for the next call again using the agenda+ label in all WHATWG repos and we would like to invite anyone that can contribute to said issues to join us.

Thank you all for attending the meeting today! Here are the notes from this meeting (the next one is at #10229):

Agenda

Attendees: Joey Arhar, Panos Astithas, David Baron, Tantek Celik, Dominic Farolino, Robert Flack, Mason Freed, Sanket Joshi, Olli Pettay, Simon Pieters, Noam Rosenthal, Kagami Rosylight, Daniel Veditz, Yoav Weiss, Chris Wilson, Anne van Kesteren, Keith Cirkel

  1. Review past action items
    1. Emilio will follow up with a PR for Render-blocking: the definition of "created by its node document's parser" is a little bit vague.
      1. Done.
    2. Simon to ping Anne to look up what Safari has implemented for Allowing UA to do <source> selection for media element · Issue #10077 · whatwg/html · GitHub
      1. Done. The group's consensus is that Simon's summary is accurate.
  2. Carryovers from last time
    1. [Dominic] Atomic move operation for element reparenting & reordering
      1. Joey's list of examples of lost state when reparenting elements: https://reparent.jarhar.com/
      2. Prerequisite issue whatwg/dom#808 is being resolved in → whatwg/dom#1261
      3. Noam: many many developers feel the pain of this issue.
      4. Anne: media elements are no longer an issue.
      5. Dominic, Yoav, Noam: iframes are a big problem for many developers & frameworks, but not all.
      6. Olli, Dominic: iframe restoration is unspecced and another issue to fix.
      7. Dominic: tackling just reordering is just as hard and not as useful to developers as tackling both reordering and reparenting.
      8. Anne: the larger question for me is whether we need to solve for iframes or not.
      9. Dominic: I think we don't want to add new states, just remove one.
      10. Anne: is there another proposed solution other than a move?
      11. Noam: just presenting all the options we have.
      12. Anne: adding a new primitive should have the same shape as the existing ones.
      13. Mason: let's not fix 100% of the corner cases before tackling the main issue. Shall we move to stage-1?
      14. Consensus in the room was to do so.
      15. Dominic: take on the big known issues now and assume the manageable risk on the long tail of other issues.
      16. Anne: I'd like to see an exhaustive enumeration of what to tackle.
      17. Dominic: we have a document that enumerates them.
      18. Olli: iframes are the trickiest thing.
  3. New topics
    1. [Kara] Image loading on page load
      1. Defer until 4/11.
    2. [Olli] Focus delegate algorithm doesn't consider elements assigned to slot
      1. See also Dialog initial focus when dialog contains a slot element #9640
      2. We need Domenic's opinion on this, given that he wrote this part of the spec.

Action Items

  1. @domfarolino will tag Atomic move operation for element reparenting & reordering with stage-1.
  2. @smaug---- will ping @domenic about Focus delegate algorithm doesn't consider elements assigned to slot.
