maybe it's as simple as putting them in dependencies so that they're available in the global node_modules and we can just add instructions on how to find them?

+1 for having a utility to install dependencies in the folder they are operating in. I've had this a lot when giving workshops

learnyounode and levelmeup do this because they were both designed to be used where you may not have internet (campjs internet for learnyounode was terrible!). They both give instructions and paths for installing dependencies from the workshop install folder and also have readmes and apidocs for local use with paths provided in the problem.txt. I wrote gfm2html for this purpose.

stream-adventure is a different matter of course.
