VMA Backup extractor (Proxmox VE)

a docker isolated proxmox vma file extractor - get full access to your files

Usage

The extract.sh script builds are docker image including the required vma tool (+libs) and opens a root shell to work with the image

Mountpoints

For performance reasons, we're using bind mounts to the current working directory

  • /mnt/backup - readonly mount to $(pwd)/backup
  • /mnt/output - mount to $(pwd)/output

Run Extraction (within isolated env)

# run extract script
./extract.sh

# convert vma file to raw disk image
vma extract /mnt/backup/vzdump-qemu.vma -v /mnt/output/vm101

# view partitions
fdisk -l /mnt/output/vm101/disk-drive-scsi0.raw

# exit docker ctrl+d

Mount RAW disk image (debian hostsystem)

# create loopback device
losetup --find --partscan output/vm101/disk-drive-scsi0.raw

# view partitions
fdisk -l | grep loop
Disk /dev/loop0: 50 GiB, 53687091200 bytes, 104857600 sectors
