RDAP server library

This java library makes it very easy to build an RDAP server that talks with your registry back-end.

Features

  • Include this library in your Java web application to significantly ease implementing an RDAP server
  • Can be combined with any back-end by simply implementing one or more methods
  • All you need to do is retrieve the data and populate some POJO's
  • The library takes care of parsing the incoming RDAP requests, calling the right methods and generating JSON responses from those POJO's
  • This project also contains a simple command-line RDAP client to test your RDAP server

This library understands and supports the following RFC's:

How it works

  • The library contains a number of POJO's (plain old Java objects) representing the data structures defined in rfc7483
  • You need to write the code to populate these objects whenever a query comes in

The flow

Let's assume that you have implemented a class com.example.rdap.MyDomainService which extends DefaultDomainService and that you have deployed your application in an application server listening at port 8080

  • The client sends an RDAP query to your server (eg. curl http://localhost:8080/rdap/domain/abc.brussels)
  • Your implementation of getDomainImpl(DomainName domainName) gets called with a DomainName object corresponding to the input (abc.brussels)
  • Your implementation retrieves all relevant data about abc.brussels from your datastore an populates a be.dnsbelgium.rdap.core.Domain object
  • The rdap server library uses this object to generate the correct JSON an return it to the client

How to use this library

Java web application example implementation

We have created a sample project which could help you with your implementation. You can find both the source and instructions in the following project: rdap-server-sample-gtld

There's a second sample project that uses Spring Boot 3, version 4 of the RDAP Server library and Java 17. You can find it here: rdap-server-sample-spring-boot-jar

Build your own implementation

The instructions below assume that you have a recent version of the JDK and Apache Maven on your system. Of course you can use other build tools (Ant, Gradle, ...) instead of Maven.

Create a new java web application, for example by running

mvn archetype:generate -DgroupId=be.yourcompany -DartifactId=rdap -DarchetypeArtifactId=maven-archetype-webapp

Or alternatively use the spring initializr to generate a new spring boot application (see also the spring boot sample).

Declare a dependency on the RDAP server library in your project

Maven: add this dependency in your pom.xml file

How to integrate with your back-end

The library uses Spring MVC to map incoming requests to the default service implementations The default implementations will return:

You only need to do the following to use your own Service implementations:

  • Extend one or more default implementations

  • Extend DefaultServiceConfig and override the appropriate methods to make sure your implementations are being used

  • Import the WebConfig

  • configure the org.springframework.web.servlet.DispatcherServlet

The following sections describe these steps in more detail

Extend the default service implementation(s):

For example:

Please note that DomainName, Domain and RDAPError are all classes defined in the rdap-service library, while in this example DomainDAO is supposed to be a class that you have implemented to retrieve the relevant data from your datastore.

The methods in DefaultXXXService ending in Impl can be overridden. rdap_level_0 rdapconformance will be set for you if you omit it.

Import Webconfig, ExceptionAdviceConfig and ControllerConfig

WebConfig contains spring mvc related configuration and will scan for the controller classes. You will need to import this configuration (spring @Import). See example further.

Import ExceptionAdviceConfig to use the provided exception advice.

Import ControllerConfig to scan for the controllers. Alternative for the ControllerConfig: add a @ComponentScan for the "be.dnsbelgium.rdap.controllers" package to your application. This last approach solves the problem that if you want to add @WebMvcTest tests to your application, all controllers are loaded (and consequently all services need to be mocked or present)

Make sure you inject your implementation

You can extend DefaultServiceConfig to provide your classes instead of the default implementation or create a new @Configuration to provide your own implementation of all services.

For example, when choosing to extend DefaultServiceConfig and only overriding the DomainService:

Configure the DispatcherServlet

This servlet needs to know your WebConfig implementation. The easiest way to do this is by passing in the fully qualified classname in web.xml

robots.txt

By default, when using WebConfig the library will return a robots.txt to prevent the service being crawled by robots. If you want to disable this, then extend WebConfig override the addResourceHandlers to add nothing.

Upgrading

Upgrading from 3.x to 4.x

The Spring Framework is upgraded from 5.3.30 to 6.0.13. Please consult the Spring Framework documention for upgrade instructions. One of the changes caused by the Spring upgrade is moving from javax.servlet to jakarta.servlet

Upgrading from 3.0.0 to 3.0.1

Upgraded a lot of dependencies, most notably: Spring version is upgraded from 5.1.6.RELEASE to 5.3.30.

The provided ExceptionAdvice class now extends ResponseEntityExceptionHandler.

A request with a parameter of the wrong type will now return a 400 (bad request) response instead of a 404 (not found)

WebConfig no longer sets useSuffixPatterMatch to false (as it is the default value).

Upgrading from 2.0.x to 3.x

From version 3.x the library requires Java 17.

Upgrading from 1.1.0 to 2.0.x

A lot of unused classes and dependencies are removed.

Removed all classes in the be.dnsbelgium.rate, be.dnsbelgium.rdap.servlet and be.dnsbelgium.rdap.spring.security packages

  • LeakyBucket and related classes
  • LoggerFilter These classes were not used in the rdap-server implementation. Feel free to copy them from the 1.1.0 version if you need them.

Moved controller classes directly in the be.dnsbelgium.rdap package to be.dnsbelgium.rdap.controller

The configuration in WebConfig is split into different parts

  • WebConfig: spring mvc related configuration,
  • ControllerConfig: adds a @ComponentScan for the package be.dnsbelgium.rdap.controller
  • DefaultServiceConfig: can be used to configure default implementations of the services
  • ApplicationPropertiesConfig: use PropertySourcesPlaceholderConfigurer instead of reading the application.properties file in the code
    • the only needed configuration property is "baseRedirectURL".
    • You can use ApplicationPropertiesConfig or use any other way supported by spring to read configuration properties.
  • ExceptionAdviceConfig: adds a ComponentScan for the package be.dnsbelgium.rdap.exception to pickup the ExceptionAdvice

The configuration of the controller is also changed:

  • unused constructor parameters are removed
  • Configuration no longer use the SpEL expressions pointing to applicationProperties, but use the ${} syntax :
    • #{applicationProperties['baseRedirectURL']} is changed into ${baseRedirectURL}
    • #{applicationProperties['redirectThreshold']} was not used and is removed
