v.1.4.0

With this release we have tried to address one of the major pain points of Panic Button so far which was unwanted triggers.

IMPORTANT: Note that the trigger mechanism has changed! You now need to confirm with one extra power button press after the first repeated presses. Triggering the alarm now requires the following steps:

  • Press the power button repeatedly until you feel a vibration.
  • Wait one second and press again to confirm.
  • The phone vibrates again to confirm that the alerts are starting to send every 5 minutes.

Please note that the hardware button trigger only works when repeatedly pressing relatively slowly (about once per second or slightly faster). If pressing faster, then triggering the alarm might not work.

You can restart the wizard to refresh your memory and learn about the new way to trigger the alarm. After unlocking the disguise, go to the Settings menu, and select "Restart the installation".

Please also note that this release contains a bug and trigger reporting module (parse) which will send debugging information via the web (through an https connection) in order to help us diagnose possible further issues with the unwanted alert triggers. We will remove this module for the production release. #64

Improvements

  • The trigger mechanism has changed and now requires a confirmation press.
  • When the alert is manually deactivated (after entering your PIN) your contacts will receive a message which says "The alert has been stopped". This provides some additional information which could be useful to understand what might be happening.
  • The information text is clearer regarding what Panic Button does. When you trigger the alert, Panic Button will start sending a message with your location every 5 minutes.
  • German translation generously contributed by https://github.com/emdete

Bug Fixes

  • FIXED: One some devices, the alert activates by itself in the middle of phone calls (it activates without triggering it with the power button or the calc app). #38 Thanks to the Thoughtworks team in Chennai which helped devise a way that will help avoid the problem.
  • FIXED: Shortcut was created by Google Play. #35

Known Bugs

  • [CRITICAL] On Android 4.4 the Sent Messages are stored on the phone #42
  • After restarting the installation wizard, it is possible that the application shortcut disappears from the Applications menu. The only workaround currently is to Uninstall the application from the Settings > Apps menu. #36
