Freeze issues in 0.8.3/0.8.4 #1333
Comments
I've been actively using 0.8.3 for six hours on mac without any trouble. I'll update this comment if I run into something though. |
Hi @pfrazee - I just upgraded to v0.8.3 and experienced a crash. I clicked the "explore" link, thought about it, then got the "It doesn't seem like anybody is sharing this page right now" message. Forced quit, started it up, still get the "It doesn't seem like anybody is sharing this page right now" message when going to the explore page. I managed to load |
Hit my second crash, while using Fritter this time. |
@rjsteinert Okay just to make sure, are you experiencing freezes/crashes, or just sites not getting found? If freezes, here's the important question: does it still happen after 2 times? Because I can only get it to happen twice on a machine, and then never. |
@pfrazee So far I've had two freezes/crashes requiring me to force quit the application. The first one happened maybe a minute after upgrading, the second took longer like say 5 minutes. |
I'm seeing it a bit more. Here's what macos gives me as a sample of the process:
|
Also getting this issue. On Mac and I can't seem to be able to load my website preview. If I try and use Live Reload, browser freezes and the only way to fix it is to force-quit and restart |
@MrUltimate Is that occurring consistently? |
(I'm asking because I'm looking for a way to predictably reproduce the freeze.) |
Just experienced my first crash. I was just reading a webpage when it froze. I've used Beaker for maybe 10 hours before it happened though. |
@pfrazee Yes, it happens consistently. I had to downgrade to 0.8.2 to get things working again. Preview mode and Live Refreshing weren't working either. To reproduce it, try loading preview mode, the website doesn't load and says no peers are available. Close, go back to Website Settings, disable publishing preview and then try loading the website with Live Reload toggled. 2-3 mins later, freeze happens consistently. |
@MrUltimate Okay thanks, I'll check into that |
Here's another sample that might be more useful than my last because MacOS collected it in response to the freeze/crash:

Good news! I managed to solve this. 0.8.4 will come out soon with the fix. Here's the commit that fixed it, for anybody that's curious: beakerbrowser/beaker-core@6d22ec3. The reproduceable case I found was that an |
Unfortunately this is still occurring, but I was able to isolate the issue to Electron and have filed an issue with a reproduceable test-case: electron/electron#16881 |
I would recommend downgrading to 0.8.2 for now.

Tengo abierto el google chrome y el beaker browser me lo congela. |
Google translate on @oleometal's comment:
Interesting. |
That is interesting indeed. I also had Chrome open using facing this issue.

I'm refactoring Beaker to use BrowserViews, which don't 100% fix the freezing problem but reduce it (#1346). Based on my tests, webviews can freeze electron on any site, whereas browserviews will only freeze on custom protocols. |
Good news: I've been working with the Electron team and we've isolated the cause. They're working on a fix now. |
is there a linked issue we can track? |
@jedahan This one and electron/electron#16881 |
@oleometal that's probably a different issue. The freezing issue we're addressing is an issue with custom protocols in Electron |
Can confirm 0.8.6 on macOS also freezing randomly. Only two tabs open, and it happened when opening Fritter, but has happened many times with no recognizable relation as to what tabs are open. |
It seems that the bug is fixed upstream, so should land in Beaker soon. But just in case it does return in the future, I've noticed that the freeze seems to happen consistently on |
@brechtcs We're waiting on electron/electron#17267 to land |
It's looking like this is 100% resolved. Thanks everybody. |
Operation System: All
Beaker version: 0.8.3
I'm seeing random Browser freezes since the roll out of 0.8.3. It has some strange characteristics and I haven't been able to isolate the cause.
