The Java docs for creating the channel are outdated. ManagedChannel channel = ManagedChannelBuilder.forTarget(hostport).usePlaintext(true).build(); should be ManagedChannel channel = ManagedChannelBuilder.forTarget(hostport).usePlaintext().build(); as the former version has been deprecated:
