Simple Gitignore From Github

This is a Go application that creates a default .gitignore based on the type of project specified. Templates for the default .gitignore come from https://github.com/github/gitignore which is open source and actively contributed to, so you will always get an up to date gitignore for your projects using this tool!

Usage

Creates a .gitignore in the current working directory with the defaults for the specified type of project.

gitignore python
gitignore go

But wait, there's more! You can chain multiple gitignores together.

gitignore macos linux windows python node vim

Now your .gitignore contains all of the default .gitignore patterns from all of the github gitignores for MacOS, Linux, Windows, Python, Node, and Vim, so you're ready to commit whatever you need to on a cross-platform polyglot application.

If you have a pre-existing .gitignore with some custom entries, don't worry, gitignore does not overwrite, it appends to any existing .gitignore file.

Please note that .gitignore uses a last rule wins policy and that while the .gitignore files hosted on github are tested and reliable, when chained together they may have unexpected conflicts especially depending on the order they are added.

If there is a possible pattern conflict found, gitignore will tell you. Additionally, comments and duplicate lines are cleaned up from the .gitignore. Some attempt is made to adapt conflicting patterns to work with eachother better like lines beginning with ! are moved to the end and lines beginning with * are moved to the beginning.

Installation

From Source

Install Go https://golang.org/

and then just get it

go get github.com/iepathos/gitignore
