@ShogunPanda Where are you getting that from? I don't think that is true at all. The spec does not recommend any timeouts: connection attempts should be in parallel, and there should be a single, standard TCP connection attempt timeout across all parallel connection attempts. 250ms is an artificial and extremely short timeout. Modern Linux kernels usually use much longer timeouts, which is why this feature has been breaking existing setups (as in #52216). The spec does recommend a delay between connection attempts, which is recommended to be 250ms (i.e., the same value that Node.js uses), but this is not meant to be used as a connection timeout! It is further recommended to base the exact delay on metrics/heuristics, which Node.js does not do. Hence, the recommended lower bound of 100ms for dynamic delays does not apply to Node.js. |

@tniessen The spec (Happy Eyeballs v2, RFC 8305) in section 5 recommends connection attempts NOT to be made in parallel and enforces a "Minimum Connection Attempt Delay" to be 100ms. But differently from other environments we don't support parallel (even delayed) attempts because we can't cancel them. So the delay actually becomes a timeout. We already set the timeout to be greater than that but I don't think we want to increase it even more otherwise people with problematic network setup will experience significant delays when establishing connection. |
Connection attempts should NOT be started simultaneously, but they should be concurrent after they have been started.
That's how Node.js implements it, but that's not what the spec recommends. Your earlier comment implied that the spec recommends a timeout (and even a timeout shorter than a second!), but that's not true. |
