When we have two databases on one server, one of which (A) is publishing logical changes and the other (B) is not publishing, we can observe runaway WAL growth when A receives no database activity for a long time but B does. The cause behind this is that the changes on B generate WAL but the replication slot for A cannot advance it's LSN cursors since pgjdbc does not confirm these LSNs. Postgres cannot recycle the old WAL (which isn't actually needed by anyone) and this will continue until a change is made which triggers a replication message.

What we can do is track the LSN of the most recent replication message. If this change was confirmed by the client, then we can use the server LSN of the KeepAlive message to advance the flush LSN without loss of data.

This may also solve the issue outlined in #1490 whereby Postgres cannot shut down as the server and application LSNs are out of sync

curious why you chose to run the test on appveyor?

Also wondering if we can refactor openPriviligedDB so we don't repeat code?

The appveyor pipeline ran automatically once I opened the PR; I assumed it was a part of the standard build process?

Regarding refactoring, yes good call - I'll do that now.

it is but we run a lot more tests on github.

In our experience, Appveoyr is slow to start, so it would be great to replace it with GitHub Actions or something else (see #2845 )

Appveyor is the only check in pgjdbc suite to verify compatibility with Windows, so we can't just remove Appveyor CI configuration.
However, I would not invest time in improving it as it is slow, so I don't always check its results.

Understood. In this case I didn't invest any time specifically in AppVeyor beyond just adding an extra table to make my new unit test work. Happy to leave it in there since without it the step doesn't pass.

Do you have any insight into why the Fedora Copr build is failing currently? It doesn't seem to be related to my change, possibly an internal cache issue? 🤔

Don't worry about the Fedora Copr Build.

Ok, thanks. Let me know if you need anything more from my side before being content to merge this! 😃

Actually and I know you went to great lengths to get this to work on Appveyor, but could you create tests that run in github ?

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you, but the new tests already run on all of the existing GitHub workflows. If you expand the Test step in any of the matrix workflows and search for the test name, you'll see it being run there

Terrific, thanks so much!

Out of curiosity, is there a roadmap for upcoming releases? I see it's been a few months since 4.6.0, perhaps there's a release planned soon which would incorporate this change?

Thanks again for the merge
