Summary:

The wrong plugin was being used to flash the firmware update for the MST hub. This is an unintended behavior in older fwupd versions.

Mitigation:

Code has been included in the 1.5.X, 1.4.x and 1.3.X branches that will prevent the Synaptics MST plugin from performing updates. Updates will be performed using the dell-dock plugin.

Solution

Perform the upgrade a second time, or update to a newer version of fwupd. The solution is included in the following fwupd versions:

1_3_X: 1.3.12
1_4_X: 1.4.3
1_5_X: 1.5.0
